Recently, a previous hotel web design client contracted me to optimize their website and to rank well on SE and put their brand out there, with a very competitive keyword in hand - the methodical (and yes, its not progressive :p) campaign blasted the interwebs with:

• couples of keyword rich articles that are submitted to 636 article sites
• 2000 targeted and highly relevant - high PR blog comments
• 300 links on social media site profiles / + some high PR blog media pages
• a bunch of review articles
• link directory submission of up to 1300 sites
• and the creme of the crop; press release articles submitted to 125 press release websites

And the initial results was just awesome, with just the Press Release campaign, it top for some weeks on Google News, contents syndicated by other news sites - that result to highly priced organic links. Started with around 10 site backlinks;  some moments later - it now runs with 400+ and counting backlinks.

Update: ranks #1 now on msn/bing
